There's an old saying that goes, "In Michigan, if you don't like the weather, then wait 5 minutes and it will change."
Last Thursday, this is what it looked like outside.
Then, a few days later, the snow was all gone...
...and then the rains came. It has poured for several days, causing flooding in certain areas around the state. There were flood warnings in effect and the news reported that people here were really worried about their houses that were located near the Grand River.
As for Michelle and myself, we had our own flooding worries. We just spent a lot of money putting in "Weeks Road" and are a bit concerned that the rains are going to wash it away. We went out yesterday to survey the damage.
We tried to fill in some of the cracks, but there is only so much you can do with sand and road gravel that is saturated with water. We've had to begin parking elsewhere so that we don't get stuck or trench the drive. It is apparent that we're going to need to have more gravel hauled in when spring hits.
Even so, it could be worse. I had expected this would be a problem in the spring; it always is a problem. I just had hoped it would wait until then to turn off warm.
I can almost hear the Al Gore crowd pointing their fingers and insisting that warm weather in January must be evidence of "global warming". So let us read together what the UN's own IPCC scientists have to say about Gore's apocalypse...
Scientists Doubt Climate Change
By S.A. Miller
The Washington Times
December 21, 2007
More than 400 scientists challenge claims by former Vice President Al Gore and the United Nations about the threat of man-made global warming, a new Senate minority report says.
The scientists — many of whom are current or former members of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Mr. Gore for publicizing a climate crisis — cast doubt on the "scientific consensus" that man-made global warming imperils the planet.
"I find the Doomsday picture Al Gore is painting — a six-meter sea level rise, 15 times the IPCC number — entirely without merit," said Dutch atmospheric scientist Hendrik Tennekes, one of the researchers quoted in the report by Republican staff of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
"I protest vigorously the idea that the climate reacts like a home heating system to a changed setting of the thermostat: just turn the dial, and the desired temperature will soon be reached," Mr. Tennekes said in the report.
Sen. James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma, ranking Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee, said the report debunks Mr. Gore's claim that the "debate is over." [Full Article...]
Isn't it funny how Gore keeps repeating the lie that "global warming" is an established fact? Where is this scientific "consensus" that I keep hearing about, Mr. Gore? But then, what can we expect from the lips of the man who once took credit for inventing the Internet?
I've always said that we have no heroes in CONgress, but I must say that I will be sad to see Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma leave. He has arguably done more to dispel the myths of anthropogenic climate change than anyone else in government. It's just too bad that his message is drown out by a massive controlled news media who make end-of-the-world scenarios a priority and the truth subjective to ratings and circulation rates. As they say in the news business, "if it bleeds, it leads!" Sensationalism has become the main staple of modern news reporting. There are almost no real "journalists" in the establishment press.
As far as my situation is concerned, I suppose there is a bright spot. Had it been colder when all of that rain fell, I would have had to shovel it. I've already done it twice, in the last month. The driveway is about 700 feet long, and it took me 4 hours the first time. The last time I did it, just a couple of weeks ago, it took me 5 hours of non-stop work, since there was more snow. Needless to say, I wasn't looking forward to a quick repeat of those conditions.
Things should be getting back to normal by Friday. A cold front is expected to move in, along with more rain and then snow. I see from the thermometer that the front might already be moving in. The winds have suddenly become very gusty, and the temperature has drastically dropped. It has went from being in the 50's, down to the 30's.
I just wish that it would stay frozen until spring, but it seems that, every year, we have a pre-spring thaw or two. It turns our driveways into massive mud pits. It's a part of the fun of living in the countryside, but I would much rather deal with this than all of the regulations, neighborhood associations, code enforcement officers and general noise that city life carries not to mention the constant threat of eminent domain, if someone with more money than you, and a plan for the community comes along.
