We have the nicest cleaning people at the station where I work. In many respects, one of the women there reminds me a lot of my mother.
She had a dilemma. They had just obtained a new puppy and her husband was about to tag a name on it that she considered was absolutely dreadful. The sad part about it is that I cannot remember what the name was he was going to call this dog. But, whatever it was, she positively hated it and begged my colleagues and I to think of a possible alternative that he might like. Her thoughts were that if she could somehow come up with a name that he liked, maybe he'd change his mind. As an incentive, she promised to bring in cookies for the person whose name was chosen.
I certainly didn't need the cookies, but I did like the name challenge. I took a pad of paper and, while I was working, whenever a suitable dog name popped into my mind, I would jot it down on the pad. After an hour or two, I had acquired a rather substantial list of possible names from which her husband could choose, which I gave to her prior to her leaving that day. Other people also accepted the challenge, although I don't think they had a list as long as mine.
The next time that I saw her, she informed me that her husband had chosen one of my names for their dog. True to her word, she came bearing sweetened gifts, which I shared with the staff.
She later brought her husband into the building with her so that he could meet me the guy who named his dog. They took the picture below, which I'm told, is now being circulated around her family on a disk. So I'm now officially part of her family, forever to be known as "that guy who named the dog". We all have our roles in life. ;)
Anyway, I thought it was all pretty neat, and thought you might enjoy the story. Below is the picture of me and their rapidly growing "puppy" whose name is now... Bear.
Thankfully, not all of life's crises are on the largest scale. Glad I could help, and thanks again for the cookies. M&Ms...yum! My favorite.
